Staying Mentally Healthy During a Pandemic

We all know how to stay physically healthy during this pandemic- wash your hands frequently, wear your mask, and only go out if you have to. However, staying mentally healthy is something that can prove to be much more difficult. Although it may be difficult to keep your mind healthy during all this, it is important to do so. If you don’t take care of your mind during this pandemic, you may notice an overall decline in your mental health. Here are some things you can do to ensure you are proactively working on staying mentally healthy.

Keep In Contact

Social connections are important during a time when physical outings are prohibited. Reaching out to friends and family is a great way to still feel connected. You can keep in contact with people via social media or video chats, aside from phone calls and texting. There have been a lot of creative gatherings hosted virtually including weddings, birthday parties, and graduation ceremonies. Find any way to keep relationships strong throughout the pandemic and your mind may find some solace.

Be Careful With the Media

Coronavirus updates are consistent, with new stories happening everyday. It can be overwhelming to constantly listen to updates on cases and restrictions, and can add to your distress and worry. On the same note, there are many false coronavirus updates on social media. Don’t leave the news on all day and don’t scroll through social media all day. Give your mind a break and be mindful of where you are putting your attention as trying to stay informed can also prove to be an added stressor to your mental well-being.

Realize What You Can Control

Even though the coronavirus seemed to be rapidly spreading, the CDC provided a list of symptoms to help you recognize if you have it. Paying attention to your body as well as taking preventative measures- frequent handwashing and using hand sanitizer, wearing a mask, and remaining at least 6 feet apart from others- can help you control your contraction of the virus. Remember that the only person you can control is yourself and you are doing everything you can to protect yourself (and others if you already have the virus). 

Find New Coping Skills

Your old coping skills may have been healthy (going to the gym) or not so much (retail therapy), but nonetheless, they aren’t available. So what can you do? Find new coping skills and ways to remain relaxed inside of your home. Writing in a journal, doing yoga or practicing meditation are just a few examples of things you can do for 15 minutes that can assist you with staying mentally healthy during the pandemic.
